Platycerium is a genus of about 18 fern species in the polypod family, Polypodiaceae. Ferns in this genus are widely known as staghorn or elkhorn ferns due to their uniquely shaped fronds. This genus is epiphytic and is native to tropical and temperate areas of South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia. Platycerium or also called Simbar Menjangan is a bunch of epiphyte ferns are often used as ornamental plants. Platycerium or Simbar Menjangan are grouped in the genus Platycerium, comprising approximately 18 species. Indonesia, at least has 5 types of Platycerium native Indonesia.

Plants of Polypodiaceae family has a unique leaf shape resembling the horns of a deer. Therefore in Indonesia this epiphyte ornamental plants is widely known by the name of Platycerium or Simbar Menjangan. The name of this plant genus, Platycerium, a pun derived from the Greece, consisting of the word "platy" meaning wide, "ceras" which means Horn.
There are nearly two dozen of species of Platycerium and more and more end up in cultivation every year. However, most are quite rare and many of those are also relatively fastidious. But a few are fairly easy and rewarding species to grow up from small plants on up to large behemoths.
As an epiphyte plants, Deer Horn live attached to the media or other plants but not detrimental (parasites) on its host. Typical plants of this nail is the shape of its leaves. Platycerium species is the most widely cultivated as an ornamental plant so it has variant most cultivars compared to other types of platycerium. Platycerium ridleyi is a kind of Platycerium are considered to have the most exotic appearance. This type of life is naturally on the island of Borneo (Indonesia and Serawak). The Latin name refers to the name of the original Singapore botanist, Sir Henry Ridley (1855-1956).
